Gearing up for Cisco’s New Data Center Exams

data center exams

Do you want to work in a data center? Or are you currently studying for a Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification? If so, you should know that Cisco is updating the material that its data center exams cover. Owing to a constant influx of new technologies and shifting job roles, the scope of data center responsibilities has changed. As a result, Cisco's changes aim to give IT pros who work with data center technologies the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.
Even if you already have an older Cisco data center certification under your belt, it’s a good idea to learn the new material the updated exams cover.

The new CCNA Data Center exams are the following:

  • The Cisco Data Center Networking (DCICN) 200-150 (which replaces the 640-911 DCICN)
  • Introducing Cisco Data Center Technologies (DCICT) 200-155 (which replaces the 640-916 DCICT)
The CCNP Data Center exam* changes are more significant. The new and more streamlined certification path includes the following:
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Unified Computing (DCUCI) 300-175 (which replaces the 642-999 DCUCI)
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCII) 300-165 (which replaces the 642-997 DCUFI)
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Virtualization and Automation (DCVAI) 300-170

The last step in the CCNP Data Center certification path allows learners to choose between the design and troubleshooting specializations:

  • Designing Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCID) 300-160 (which replaces the 642-998 DCUCD and 642-996 DCUFD)
 OR

  • Troubleshooting Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCIT) 300-180 (which replaces 642-035 DCUCT and 642-980 DCUFT)

*Note that the CCNP Data Center v5.0 exams were available only through July 23, 2017. Learners no longer have the option to choose between v5.0 and v6.0 exams.

If the exciting and expanding world of data centers is calling your name and you want to explore whether it’s a good fit, you should consider studying for and taking at least one of these new exams. The CCNA exams are better for gauging first steps into the data center realm, and the CCNP exams showcase a higher level of mastery of the concepts tested.
Each set of exams had some outdated material removed and more current material added. To ensure you’re up to date, here are the noteworthy changes.

CCNA Data Center Exam Changes

The new CCNA Data Center exams include the Cisco Data Center Networking (DCICN) 200-150 and the Cisco Data Center Technologies (DCICT) 200-155.

Unlike the v5.0 CCNA Data Center exams, the new v6.0 exams don’t cover any product-specific material outside of the Cisco network. They don’t discuss the fundamentals such as SAN architecture or product-specific functions such as password recovery, booting and diagnostics. They also exclude Cisco IOS router topics, network design models, and network services such as load balancers, Cisco Application Control Engine (Ace), and Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS).

Instead, the new CCNA Data Center exams go deeper into data center architecture, unicast and multicast, authentication and authorization, and accounting (AAA). They also cover new switching technology through a variety of questions regarding port channeling and data-plane separation. The exams include an overview of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), along with some coverage of data center storage and Internet Protocol (IP) storage architecture and design. They expand their coverage of virtualization, overlay, underlay and data-plane topics. In addition, Cisco-specific Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) concepts are covered, such as policy-driven application-deployment model and the ACI logical model.

CCNP Data Center Exam Changes

The new v6.0 CCNP Data Center exams include the following:
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Unified Computing (DCUCI) 300-175
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCII) 300-165
  • Implementing Cisco Data Center Virtualization and Automation (DCVAI) 300-170
  • Designing Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCID) 300-160
  • Troubleshooting Cisco Data Center Infrastructure (DCIT) 300-180
The new CCNP Data Center exams avoid product-specific topics such as Nexus switches and Cisco NX-OS Software. They won’t test you on how to implement any UCS Server Virtualization features. Unlike prior exams, they omit Adapter FEX, VM-FEX and Nexus vCenter Manager integration. The exams also reduce (though they don’t completely remove) coverage of data center architecture and design, data center security implementation and design, and network virtualization.

Topics added to the new CCNP Data Center exams include automation, central management and scripting tools. They also discuss dedicated domain security and data center storage connectivity, including FCoE. New data center and routing technologies, including VXLAN, OSPFv2, OSPFv3 and ISIS protocols, are covered in the new exams. In addition, the exams address broad data center security such as ACLs, CoPP, fabric binding and port security. Study up on how to troubleshoot routing protocols, virtual switching technologies, LAN and SAN security, and compute security.

Are the New Exams Worth It?

No one ever said that earning a Cisco certification, especially at the associate or professional level, is easy. You might be wondering whether it’s worth the effort, especially if you have other data center certifications under your belt. Cisco exams do matter, though. They help you set yourself apart from the pack during interviews and hiring. Cisco is one of the most widely used and respected vendors on the market and has been for a long time. So, a Cisco certification carries a lot of weight. Also, according to PayScale, IT pros who have earned Cisco CCNA certification can earn between $41,029 and $127,589 a year, on average.

Whether you’re a seasoned IT pro or a newbie, it’s important to make yourself stand out among applicants if you’re pursuing a data center career. Earning any of these new data center certifications not only shows your dedication to having a career in technology and data center architecture but also demonstrates your commitment to learning.
It’s tough to earn a Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification, but that’s partly why they matter to hiring professionals. You’ll need to spend hours watching videos, taking practice tests and using virtual labs to make sure you have the knowledge to pass the exam—but it’ll be well worth it once you have the certification.

Cisco certifications can benefit you in many ways. They can boost your resume, increase your salary and prove your commitment to learning in-demand technologies. So, you can’t go wrong with a Cisco certification, but make sure you study the latest material before you sit down to take an exam.
